Hi All, I'm getting my head around converting our wetroom (vinyl) back into a bathroom (with a tiled floor).

The current sub floor is:

Floorboards then
6 mm ply then
2-3mm of some grey material (slc?)
a thin layer of brown https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/
some lovely non slip vinyl.

I'm currently thinking to strip down to the floorboards and fit orbry board but I'm not sure what to do with the shower former. My gut tells me to break it up and take it out, put some new floorboards down and orbry board the whole room but my Dad tells me to fill it with slc, put ply in the rest of the bathroom up to the level of the former and then orbry board over the lot.

There is a lot of really good advice on this forum and it's shown me that it's a lot more involved than I expected.
Thanks

Thank you for replying. I had short listed Hardie floor but, other than orbry being marketed as water-proof and Hardie as water-resistant, I couldn't work out what the difference was between them, I was leaning towards Orbry simply because I believe Hardie is an Australian product and Orbry is British (as far as I can tell). Is there a bigger difference?

Orby is an xps foam board faced with mesh and a cement coating and is waterproof if the board joints and board fixings are taped and tanked.
it is also an insulation board.
Hardie is purely a cement board and only uneffected by water, and not waterproof. Water passes thro it but it does not break down.
I would opt for your solution.
Adding slc and ply, and then Orby, would only raise your floor even more.

Thanks for all the advice and info, it's very reassuring. How thick a board do you think I should opt for, will 6mm be enough? I'm guessing it might depend on the condition of the floorboards underneath once I've screwed them all down?
