Discuss BAL External Tiling Range in the Tiling News; Tile News area at TilersForums. USA and UK Tiling Forum

Please checkout the following advertisement.
I received an email about BAL External tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout this morning and thought I'd post it to our tiling news area of the forum because there isn't much actual tile news in here. But if you're looking for workwear you're on a winner. :D :D (no offence to our awesome sponsor @************ - it's just this area isn't getting much tile stuff posted to it and that's my bad I guess)

BAL Level Out for External tile with BAL https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and Grout

When fixing onto concrete which is in a good condition for tile, but may need smoothing out, BAL is launching new BAL Level Out, a fast-setting one-part external levelling compound for smoothing rough or impact damaged concrete.

There's a brilliant YT Live video where David Rowley, the Grand Master of tile and Adhesives, explains in great detail every aspect of the range and there are a few demonstrations by the looks of it. At 45 minutes long I must admit I haven't found time to watch it on this sunny Monday morning. But I'm sure it's top notch.

There will be a few posts related to this on our Tile News blog. Our sponsors Mapei tile adhesives also have levelling systems, adhesives and grout to cater for external tile.

Please reply in the comments with which tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout you use when tile externally. Not the time of year for it, but at one point over the last 18 months it might have been the only tile we would have been doing due to lockdown restrictions!

Hello,
Will BAL Terrace Grout for BAL External tile provide a waterproof seal please?
Hi Jim,

I don't think you need a waterproof seal for a terrace as such but its mention of flexibility does suggest its additives will do such a thing. If you are creating a terrace then you need to manage the flow of water. Consider reading this: Balconies and terraces | Schlüter-Systems - https://www.schluter.co.uk/balconies-and-terraces.aspx

And downloading this: https://www.tilersforums.com/attachments/schluter-external-tiling-pdf.124422/
  1. What type of tiles are you considering?
  2. What is the substrate (floor structure) you're tile to?
  3. How big is the area you're tile?

Hello Dan,
Thanks for your interest.
If you look at the photo, that shows the area I am having trouble with. It is about 2.5m by 1.5m.
I am trying to solve the problem of rain running under the tiles and leaching out on to the conservatory glass roof. This is almost impossible to remove from the glass. I am planning on retiling the area and grouting the tiles (they werent grouted previously) to prevent this from happening, ie prevent water running under the tiles. The substrate is a wooden structure covered with tarmac, then fibreglass matting on that. I haven't chosen the tiles yet.

There they are Dan.
Just to make clear, no water leaks in to the conservatory, only seems to run under the tiles and out on to the glass conservatory roof and stains the glass. It is that problem I am trying to solve.
Regards, Jim

In the case you have, the water will penetrate the grout and https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and run onto the substrate and down as you describe. It's meant to do that. But I understand the staining.

How the hell is that holding up? lol Looks precarious there in the photos but I'm sure it's using a lintel or something.

I tell you what mate, I'd give Mapei (0121-5086970) and Nicobond (020 8586 4600) a bell. Speak to their technical department. Say Dan has sent you from TilersForums.com who they sponsor, and they'll be able to do you a tech spec and tell you what https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout you need. Though also call BAL on 01782 591120 and say Dan sent you from TilersForums.com. Then see which adhesives you can get in your area, and take it from there.

p.s, Ideally on the new setup you need a small gutter to take the water away from the floor. www.schluter-systems.co.uk might be able to help with this. I'd also use their Ditra matting instead of your fiberglass thing, or look at anti-crack matting. Also consider the weight of all this. Tiles including https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout and other layers and products. I'd hope it's fixed well to the house!

Thanks Dan, I'll follow those tips up.
By the way, there is a 'goal post' frame built in to the conservatory to keep it up. It's been there about 16 years and stayed put fine!
Thanks again..
Jim
