It's on offer at my local Jewson's at the moment. Seems to be a cement board of some sort. Anybody used it? I'm worried it's cheap for a reason!

It's not cheap its good value for money and if plastering or rendering over it you need the manufactures recomended primer

do you think it could be used as an lightweight alternative to plasterboard to create a false ceiling?

It’s definitely not light. If you want light stick to wickes tile backer board with the middle being foam.
