can you use american power tools over here in the uk? i know that they run on 110v and we use 110v on building sites, but wanted to know is it just a matter of switching the plugs over to the same as our 110v plugs? I know that the Hz is different and may affect the speed of the tool.

In a word Yes, I have a 110v US Dewalt chop saw - but I have a bespoke step down converter for it.

The only thing to notice is the Hertz rating of the power supply is different. 50hz vs 60hz.

In reality it makes very little difference.

As above I have a variable speed grinder/polisher, works fine

so its just a matter of changing the plug over? Have heard reports that because the hz is not the same as ours that it causes the tools to burn out quicker. don't know how reliable that is.

My US Spec Mitre Saw was used daily to make packing cases in my warehouse. It ran for 5 years without issue at which point it needed a new main bearing on the spindle. The motor is still going strong.

I didn't simply swap the plug to a UK one though I have a US to UK step down converter which utilises the original US plug still. One of these infact:-

UK 240v to USA 110volt Step Down Transformer 2000Va

I bought a lot of USA tools in one go back when the exchange rate was silly ($2 - £1) some years ago so even spending money on a step down converter saved me shed loads.

Most of my tools come from the USA it's great having the 110 charges on site even have USA plugs on some with USA extension lead  Just wish they came with with the USA breakfast lol
