    I know my limitations when a regular tiler suggested eliminating the gap at the top by widening the grout line. Spaced out on a floor to ceiling batten may work but boxes of metros nominally 100mm ? It looked good enough for me at the sill .

    don't put bonding/hardwall/ or anything else apart from sand and cement on the inside of an outer solid non-cavity brick wall. The others draw in damp.

    if it's the inside of an outside wall then plastering sand & cement onto the brick. If there's another room on other side then probably Hardwall then Multifinish plaster.

    @Diggy , awarded " best answer to unwanted job request ". Grout usually belongs to bathroom with jammed shut window and extractor fan stuffed with talcum powder.

    @whitebeam. Lovely example of cutting. The O.P 's socket job from last Christmas could have had three cables if it was a ring main serving a spur.

    @MikeW . I faded out the white paint from the aerosol to help lose the repair, old bath/ many shades of white. I sprayed cars once for a living but if you can practise first with an old aerosol you can make a difference.
